During these 5 days we will teach you a model for hypnosis. In the configuration that we are going to teach you, it's a very powerful tool. Milton H. Erickson, M.D., is considered to have been the world’s foremost authority and practitioner of hypnotherapy and brief therapy. His clients and colleagues knew him for his for his consistent ability to quickly achieve therapeutic outcomes.

Those patterns which are characteristic of his approach are demonstrated as sequences of internal and external behaviours that can be duplicated by anyone. You will learn to replicate these powerful patterns. This diploma course will not make you Milton H. Erickson, but it will make it possible for you to reproduce in your own work many of the therapeutic skills that made Erickson perhaps the most consistently successful psychotherapist known.

Detailed Description:

Hypnosis is the art and science of using verbal and non-verbal communication patterns to assist another individual in entering an altered state of consciousness: often though not exclusively, a trance state. Hypnotherapy, as the name implies, involves the therapeutic applications of hypnosis. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy is considered to be the most effective form, combining the skills of hypnosis with the induction of special trance states and the use of suggestion to facilitate meaningful psychological change. A basic goal of Ericksonian hypnotherapy is to involve cooperation of the clients “unconscious mind” in his or her healing process.

The major developer of this clinical approach to hypnosis was Milton H. Erickson M.D. In developing almost 60 years of psychiatric investigation to innovative and therapeutic uses of hypnosis, Erickson developed an approach to psychotherapy that was truly unique. Erickson’s approach was first and foremost one of cooperation (emphasising the cooperative relationship between hypnotist and subject).

This Ericksonian approach to hypnotherapy contrasts the more traditional views of the authoritarian approach (emphasising the hypnotists “power”) and the standardised approach (emphasising the subjects “susceptibility”). This approach emphasises that trance always occurs in a relationship context in which neither hypnotist or subject can be considered independently of each other.

Thus, the Ericksonian practitioner cooperates according to a principle of utilisation, wherein the client’s patterns of self-expression are recognised as constituting the basis for therapeutic trance development. This requires adaptive rather than standardised instructions, as the ongoing behaviour of the subject. In this fashion, the path to trance is always a unique one, based on the unique expressions of both hypnotist and client. In other words, trance unfolds from an experiential, interpersonal encounter in which the therapist aligns the client, thereby enabling both parties to become increasingly receptive to each other.

This course then identifies other key areas underlying Ericksonian hypnotherapy: (1) each person is unique; (2) hypnosis is an experiential process of communicating ideas; (3) each person has generative resources; (4) trance potentates resources; (5) trance is naturalistic and biologically essential; (6) Ericksonian approaches orient to solutions more than problems; (7) a person’s uniqueness may be appreciated at many levels; and (8) the unconscious can operate generative.

You will develop the general approach of the Ericksonian hypnotherapist, developing three key ideas in the process. First, integrity is an essential context for therapeutic effectiveness. Second, the hypnotherapist may develop an “interpersonal trance” with the client as a means of stimulating unconscious creativity and achieving therapeutic outcomes. Third, the principle of cooperation (that is, accepting and utilising the clients reality) is the primary basis for all techniques. We consider this program a must for the serious student/practitioner of hypnosis.
