What is NLP?
NLP is rapidly becoming recognised as the most effective technology for human achievement in every field - personal development, the arts, business, education, communication, sport...
In short, NLP gives us an instruction manual of how to use our own brain.
Neuro – The nervous system through which experience is received and processed through the five senses – Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic (feeling), Olfactory (smell) & Gustatory (taste).
Linguistic – Language and non-verbal communication systems through which neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning.
Programming – The ability to organise our communication and neurological systems to achieve specific desired goals and results.
NLP began as a model of how we communicate to ourselves and others and was developed by Dr Richard Bandler and John Grinder. NLP is based on the principle that all behaviour has structure which can be modelled, learned, taught and changed (re-programmed). Practitioners can organise information and perceptions in ways that allow them to achieve results that were once inconceivable.
This knowledge has helped us so much, personally and professionally, that we want to make it available to everyone. We know that people learn best when they feel secure and enjoy themselves, so we design our courses using the principles of accelerated learning to create an environment in which everyone finds it easy to learn.
You'll be surprised how easy it is to understand and use NLP, and the powerful difference it can make to your life and to the lives of people around you.
A history of NLP
The concept of NLP was by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. These two men studied the working processes of noted therapists such as Fritz Perlz (Gestalt), Virginia Satir (family therapy), and Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (medical hypnosis). They also combined their own skills from three disciplines – linguistics, computers, and Gestalt Psychology. As a result they came up with a behavioural model and a set of operational procedures. As NLP expanded it has incorporated material from several additional disciplines including cybernetics, philosophy, and neurology. It is also applied in numerous fields, such as law, business, and education.
The purpose of NLP is to help people, groups, and organisations by working directly with the perceptual maps they have for organising their experience – particularly those involving decision-making, creativity, learning, and motivation.
The name, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, refers to the common process all human beings use for encoding, transferring, and modifying behaviour.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a discipline that was developed to answer the question, "How, specifically, do individuals at the top of their professions consistently and elegantly achieve their desired outcomes?"
Through this process, the question has evolved into a even more fundamental query, “What is the structure of subjective experience in humans?” The answers to those questions have resulted in the development of a set of powerful, effective, and systematic techniques of communication and change, designed to help anyone in a profession achieve desired outcomes, more efficiently and effectively.
NLP focuses on identifying and using patterns in the thought processes that influence people's verbal and non-verbal behaviour as a means of improving the quality and effectiveness of their lives.
Why subjective experience?
As human beings we receive information about the world through our senses (see, hear, feel, smell and taste). We then make maps of our environment on the inside. These maps can only be made of five components – our senses! These mental maps are stored in that vast human filing cabinet that we call the unconscious mind.
Our entire history of experiences are housed within this library and each memory has a record of what was seen, heard, felt, smelt, and tasted at that time. These perceptual maps affect our behaviour in each situation that we encounter.
NLP states that the map is not the territory, or, the menu is not the meal. Like any good map maker, we tend to leave things out. Until NLP came along, no-one had a simple way changing these maps at will. NLP teaches you how to change these mental maps both in yourself and others. Read the following examples:
Case Studies
Example #1: Personal Change
Consider a successful business man that is single and still feels shy at approaching an attractive woman. When he sees a woman he becomes conscious of an uncomfortable feeling that stops him from saying hello. He feels that his life is misery.
With an NLP toolbox, that man can unfold the rest of his map for being uncomfortable around attractive women. He asks himself specific NLP questions to recover the other representations. He discovers that attached to the negative feeling is an image. The image is of himself being rejected by the top girl when he was in high school. He also hears the sounds of his classmates ridicule. He realises that this map is impoverished and decides to do something about it.
Using specific NLP techniques, he changes the image to something more appropriate. He installs a powerful voice that motivates him. He checks these alterations in his perceptual map by thinking of meeting an attractive woman and saying hello. An unusual feeling of excitement engulfs him. Later that day he notices an attractive woman. The feeling of uneasiness is gone. Replaced by excitement. He smiles at the woman and says hello.
Note: NLP focuses on structure and not content. Therefore, you could replace the above details with those of someone wanting to speak in public without fear, fly in an airplane without nervousness and so on and so fourth.
Example #2: Changing Others.
Consider a person that feels stuck and has difficulty motivating themselves to do the things that they need to improve their live. With your NLP toolbox you greet that person and quickly establish rapport via subtle changes in your body position, breathing pattern etc. Asking specific NLP questions, you unpack their impoverished mental map.
You notice several key limiting beliefs that that person has about their worth. You unpack the structure of those maps and assist them in changing each. Within moments the beliefs that underpinned their restricted behaviour are gone. Replaced with powerful new ones that highlight their ability to do well.
You ask them to think about the difficulty the had in motivating themselves. Instead they feel only motivation. They thank you and go off to get things done.
Note: Again we emphasises that NLP focuses on structure and not content. Therefore, you could use these techniques to influence selling, to help one overcome emotional difficulty, or to be better at their golf game etc.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a natural state of awareness, often associated with relaxation, where the client becomes open to suggestion. The imagination can be used to make positive and permanent changes. All hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis and no one can be induced into a hypnotic state against his or her will. You allow yourself to be guided into hypnosis and you remain in control at all times. You always know what is happening and you can come out at any time by opening your eyes.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
Imagine yourself standing on the beach, watching the waves rushing to the shore, and then return back to the ocean. Feel the cool, pleasant breeze, and breath in the intoxicating smell of the ocean's water. Tune in to the feeling of calmness that you experience now. Stay with this image and feeling for a while. It is pleasant, isn't it?
It does not matter that this scene is taking place in your imagination and is not real. You have been successful in invoking feelings associated with being on the beach. You were engaged in some sort of meditation (hypnosis). Was it difficult?
Many erroneously believe that it is only a means to relax the body and mind, when actually it is a lot more than this. Relaxation is very important, but it is only one of the by-products of hypnosis, and not the end aim.
Under hypnosis all outside distractions are eliminated and your attention is focused on the hypnotherapist's voice. It is this profound concentration that permits suggestions to guide you into your unconscious. The principal reason for its use is that under hypnosis you become aware of your present behavioral patterns, and you are guided and to adopt new, desired and beneficial ones. By using the power of the mind, a hypnotherapist can work with the patient to discover the cause of physical and emotional problems and begin to effect a cure.
Will I lose control without knowing it?
Hypnotherapists do not possess the power to control other people's minds. They guide you into deep relaxation so that you can access your unconscious mind. In this state you are not constrained by the inhibitions which normally prevent you from accessing you inner thoughts and feelings. If you don't want to reveal things that are private, you won't.
Can I be made to do some thing against my will?
NO. Hollywood notwithstanding, any suggestion contrary to your inner convictions will either be ignored by you, or you will come out of the hypnotic state.
Can I be stuck in a hypnotic state?
No, since it is the person being hypnotised who actually induces himself through his own convictions. Just as a person cannot be hypnotised against his own will, he can bring himself out in a split second.
What problems can it help?
It is difficult compiling a list of problems and ailments where Hypnotherapy can help. Why? Because the list is endless...
Stage Hypnosis:
Stage Hypnosis is probably one of the most controversial ways hypnosis is used today. There is a lot of concern over it's use, however, it really works because the practitioner has developed the ability to choose subjects with extrovert personalities who are susceptible to the power of suggestion. Social compliance can be a great motivator and being under hypnosis a good excuse to really express another side of yourself. The stage hypnotist has contributed to the image of hypnosis as a 'trance', 'sleeplike' or 'out-of -this-world'. In fact the opposite is true: under a hypnotic state all your five senses are heightened.
History of Hypnotherapy:
Hypnotherapy is a form of healing that can be traced back thousands of years to cultures where dancing and chanting were used as healing rituals. In ancient Egypt, people visited "sleep temples" where they were seen to enter a "trance-like" state before being cured of common ailments. The Druids, who referred to altered states of consciousness as "magic sleeps" also practised a sophisticated form of hypnotherapy.
By the early 20th century, hypnosis was seen primarily as a form of entertainment. In 1955 the British Medical Association endorsed the practice of "hypnotherapy" and now it is increasingly an accepted part of conventional medicine.
Hypnotherapy is becoming an accepted part of the treatment protocol for a wide range of diseases. It is often used within the hospice environment for the treatment of cancers as it can assist the patient in dealing with the stress of their illness.
Hypnotherapists are increasingly playing a role in general healthcare. It is estimated that more than 75% of modern day illnesses are stress induced. Hypnotherapy has a role to play in reducing stress and making significant changes to our body chemistry.
What is Thought Field Therapy (TFT)?
TFT (thought field therapy ) is a method of treating psychological and related disorders based on the belief that imbalances in a person's vital energy (or qi in traditional Chinese medicine) can cause adverse physical or emotional distress. Developed in 1981 by California clinical psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan, TFT is now used to treat a range of conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, anxiety, depression, addictive urges, arthritis, pain, and insomnia.
In recent years the therapy has had positive results in treating the trauma-related problems that resulted from the Nairobi embassy bombing of 1998, the Columbine High School tragedy of 1999, and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In 2000, a team of TFT practitioners put together by the Global Institute of Thought Field Therapy in Delaware visited Yugoslavia to treat trauma victims in war-torn Kosovo. Both practitioners and patients were amazed by the results of TFT treatment, not only in reducing psychological distress but also in alleviating physical pain. The Medical Chief of Staff in Kosovo, Dr. Shkelzen Syla, subsequently wrote a letter to Dr. Callahan stating, "The success from TFT was 100% for every patient and they are still smiling until this day. . . . I have full authority over all medical decisions in Kosovo. I am . . . starting a new national program. The emphasis of the national program will be thought field therapy.
Clearly the use of TFT has come a long way, considering that Dr. Callahan accidentally discovered the therapy while treating a patient named Mary, who suffered from an intense fear of water. After 18 months of treatment, including cognitive and behavioral therapy, hypnosis, relaxation training, and biofeedback, in addition to several other therapeutic approaches, Mary could barely approach a pool, and still couldn't bear to look in. She continued to complain of a sick feeling in her stomach at the sight or thought of water.
On a whim, and not expecting any real results, Dr. Callahan asked Mary to think about her fear of water while tapping under her eye using two fingers. According to body maps used in traditional Chinese medicine, the stomach meridian begins right below the eye, and Callahan hypothesised that if Mary tapped there it could restore the flow of qi to that meridian. Indeed, moments later Mary announced that the queasy feelings in her stomach had disappeared. She hurried to a pool adjacent to Dr. Callahan's office, and began splashing her face with water. Mary's water phobia has not returned to this day.
Based on his results with Mary, Dr. Callahan expanded on his discovery, developing several step-by-step sequences of tapping, or algorithms for various conditions. Often only one session is required to permanently eliminate emotional distress in relation to a particular problem. Issues that are more complex, may require further sessions. According to Callahan, the treatment algorithms are 80% to 90% effective. Those patients who don't respond to the algorithms generally respond to an individualised diagnosis by a practitioner trained in diagnostics, raising the rate of efficacy to 90% to 95%.
How does it work?
Though there are still questions about how TFT does actually work, Dr. Callahan theorises that when a person thinks of a particular emotional problem (such as a phobia), an individual thought field similar to an electrical field is generated. Callahan believes that emotional problems arise from blockages in these thought fields, which he terms "perturbations." In order to return the body's energy system to a state of balance, all perturbations must be removed.
During a TFT session, patients are asked to think about an upsetting situation and then rate the distress they feel at the thought. Depending on the emotions experienced, and the meridian(s) affected, the therapist will prescribe a certain tapping sequence. Performing the required algorithm while focusing on the problem at hand is believed to clear the emotional blockage, allowing energy to flow freely through the affected meridian(s), thus eliminating distress. Results are generally seen almost immediately, at which time the patient is "cured" of the problem in relation to that thought field. Though there are certain conditions that can block TFT from working, according to Callahan these problems are relatively quick and simple to treat.
What can you Expect?
After taking a medical history, the therapist will begin your session by asking you to concentrate on the problem that is causing you distress. You are then asked to rate the severity of your distress on a scale of one to ten. Based on the distress rating, the therapist will use either two or three fingers to tap firmly from five to ten times on specific meridian points, according to the algorithm prescribed for you.
Once this prescribed sequence of tapping is completed, you will again be asked to rate your level of distress. A further sequence, which consists of tapping a specific meridian point on the back of your nondominant hand in combination with a series of eye movements, is then performed. After completing this sequence, you again rate your distress level. The original sequence is then repeated, and after completion you rate your distress level a final time. The level of distress should decrease steadily throughout the session, and by the end, if treatment is successful, you should report no distress at all.
Successful treatment may be hindered by what Callahan terms "psychological reversal," a state in which the polarity of the electrical energy coursing through a person's meridians is temporarily reversed. The result is a subsequent reversal of an individual's beliefs and behaviors, accompanied by a negative, self-destructive attitude. Psychological reversal can be treated using a tapping sequence on the side of the hand. Once this is done, the patient should then respond to another round of basic TFT treatment.
A TFT treatment session typically lasts about 15 minutes, and if it is successful, only one session is needed. Once a perturbation is removed and energy is again flowing freely along a meridian, it is unlikely that a blockage will return to that meridian. Sessions may take longer if the practitioner is treating energy toxins or psychological reversal, or if the emotional problem is particularly complex.
Health Benefits
Though TFT remains controversial, even among alternative practitioners, an increasing number of studies and a wealth of anecdotal evidence have found TFT to be effective for phobias, PTSD, panic attacks, depression (including loss and grief), stress, performance anxiety, and travel anxiety. It may also be helpful in alleviating addictive urges, insomnia, headaches, and body pains.
A research paper published in the October, 2001 Journal of Clinical Psychology reports a correlation between successful TFT treatment and improved heart rate variability (HRV), a measurement of cardiovascular health. HRV refers to the degree of fluctuation in the length of intervals between heart beats. Low heart rate variability has been shown to be a predictor of cardiac vulnerability and mortality. Several other studies have also illustrated a direct relationship between low HRV and psychological problems such as PTSD, phobias, anxiety disorders, and depression.
In other research, a study of people with a fear of heights reported positive results with subjects who received TFT treatment in comparison to a control group that received a placebo treatment using a series of taps on meridian points not used in TFT.
Several published case studies also show promising results for the use of thought field therapy in treating insomnia. One study involved a man who suffered from insomnia almost every night. He had unsuccessfully tried a Voice Technology session before seeing Dr. Callahan himself. In just one session, Callahan taught the man the appropriate algorithm, and identified several energy toxins related to foods. Within a few days of cutting out the foods and performing the algorithm at home, the patient had his first good night's sleep in months. He has had few relapses of insomnia since, and the treatment and change in diet also improved his heart rate variability by almost 200%.
TFT may also be useful in the treatment of arthritis pain. In an article “Thought Field Therapy, Naturopathy, and Arthritis”, TFT practitioner Dr. Robert Harris maintains that arthritis symptoms can often be traced to a past traumatic life event. He cites one of his clients, in particular, who developed arthritic symptoms after a car accident. The woman had received standard medical treatment, which was successful. However, a year after the accident, symptoms began to return, and worsened as time went on. Dr. Harris first performed TFT treatment to alleviate the traumatic anxiety the patient felt over the accident. Then he attempted TFT treatment to eliminate her pain. Today she remains pain free, and no longer feels anxiety about the accident.
While these examples are only a few in a growing body of evidence in support of thought field therapy, critics argue that more rigorous clinical trials and controlled studies are needed to thoroughly evaluate its efficacy. In the meantime, those who utilise and promote the therapy maintain that the extraordinary results they have achieved with TFT speak for themselves.

Is it necessary to do the “Introduction to NLP” before doing the NLP Practitioner Certification?
No. This course is for people who are as yet undecided if they would like to do the NLP Practitioner Certification or who just want to get a taste of NLP before they commit to the NLP Practitioner Certification with us.
Is it possible for me start and complete the Master Practitioner straight after finishing my NLP Practitioner Certification?
Yes, NLP encourages you to immerse yourself in a subject while you are learning it. We would recommend you take full advantage of our free practice groups whilst doing this.
Is it really possible for me to do the NLP Practitioner in just 7 days and the NLP Master Practitioner in just 9 days?
Yes. We teach NLP using NLP – that is why it is the technology of achievement. We teach by demonstration and installation, we install an accelerated learning strategy at the start of the course and maintain this template throughout. This is in line with the latest teachings and understandings of NLP and the Society of NLP. As for tape/CD sets and other media, while this may prove a useful adjunct to training, one may want to question the competency of trainers that insist on such material. We prefer you to exit the course walking the walk instead of merely talking the talk.
Our emphasis is on behavioural competency and personal congruence. Our brand of NLP bypasses much of the old NLP ways and goes directly to the heart of the matter. You will learn rapid and simple techniques for re-programming your mind and the mind of others to achieve beneficial outcomes. Our focus is on changing belief systems and we install strategies for generative change. Your life will be different after these courses, things will change...

Do you feel the decision to take this NLP training is an important one?
Yes. To take NLP Training is a "very" important decision. It is a decision that will have lasting and positive effects on your life and the lives of those around you. As you consider taking this step, you may want to think carefully about the aspects of your life you want to change and transform, and the ones you wish to enrich even further. Most people come to NLP training with a list of areas in their lives they want to improve, and leave with much more - gaining the ability to create continuous growth and improvement throughout their lives. It's your decision...
Business delegates tell us that our format for the NLP practitioner accreditation process, which includes a total of eight days of training, is much more practical than a 20 day course. Plus, the investment in training is more easily justified. We actually cover all the key points from a 20-day practitioners course, and we make the content more relevant to a business audience. Another factor that differentiates us is that our courses and accreditation are approved by Richard Bandler, the co-founder of NLP and the founder of the Society of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (SNLP.) For those who want to further improve their skills, 3-day master practitioner courses are available. The master practitioner accreditation process is a total of 9 days training.
